As a pianist, composer, and a fearless explorer of worldwide musical landscapes, Roger Davidson is uncategorizable, yet distinctive. He’s an endless font of melody and positive spirit; and whether the music is classical, Latin, Brazilian, klezmer, sacred, or jazz, he finds the common threads. Music from the Heart is his second album with Hendrik Meurkens, arguably the premier living master of jazz harmonica and a celebrated vibraphonist as well. This set of original Brazilian-flavored songs is in large part a love letter by Roger to his wife Nilcelia. Joined by two of Brazil’s finest musicians, drummer Adriano Santos and bassist Eduardo Belo, Roger and Hendrik take an exuberant ride through some of Roger’s latest music, including a jazz samba (My Love Is Only You); a romantic, French-flavored bossa nova (Celia); a playful chorinho (O Mico) that evokes a Brazilian monkey; and Samba de Alegria, a rollicking party for the whole quartet. Music from the Heart is an album that was created to lift spirits and instill hope.
