Doug MacDonald Trio
Live In Beverly Hills
Doug Macdonald - Guitar
Lou Shoch - Bass
Billy Paul - Drums
Back in May 2012, I assembled a trio of LA area jazz musicians to perform at the Beverly Hills Art Show. Our drummer, Billy Paul, happened to record this gig and upon listening to the tracks, I was blown away by the hard, crisp energy of our performance. Please enjoy the fresh spontaneity of this moment in time, it truly was a magical day. - Doug MacDonald
From Billy Paul -
I agree with everything that Doug has written, it was a magical day. For a musician like Doug, who has made many recordings of his own and has performed with the likes of The Clayton-Hamilton Orchestra, Bill Holman etc., Doug’s excitement about this project says it all.
The late Lou Shoch played everywhere from the White House with Lou Rawls, to Wembley Stadium in front of a crowd of 100,000 people. He was excited to play this concert with his close friends and Lou definitely lives on in this recording.
I, too, have been around the metaphorical “musical block” as a performer with artists such as Jack Sheldon, Steve Allen, and Terry Gibbs. However, recording live on this date was an exceptional experience.
I believe the incredible energy displayed in this recording comes from several sources. Our long lasting friendship, our ability to play “as one” by complimenting each other’s musicality and finally, a “spirit in the air” generated by the live audience and a great sound system. All of this, in my opinion, makes for a once in a lifetime recording!
New Method Book
Preface
The concepts in this collection were inspired by the Equal Interval System (EIS) created by arranger/composer Lyle Spud Murphy. His goal was to create an atonal method for composition based on the naturally occurring overtone series. Essentially, these studies in “musical mathematics” can teach you how to write free horizontal lines. Fellow guitarist, Terry Thompson asked me to write out some lines that could be applied within the context of musical improvisation.
Terry and I developed this process over quite some time and in the end, amassed a rather large amount of material that is now being presented to you in this lesson book.
We hope that you can apply these chromatic type ideas within your solos, intros, turnarounds, cadenzas, interludes, and other musical expressions. - Doug MacDonald
