These original compositions were composed by the band members and each involves different harmonic and rhythmic concepts. Saxophonist Shelley Yoelin’s "Secret Steps" follows the form of the standard "Secret Love" with some harmonic modifications and a bridge based on the jazz classic "Giant Steps" by John Coltrane, hence "Secret Steps". His piece "Goin Out" alternates between three diatonic modes, Dorian, Phrygian and Locrian. Guitarist Gabriel Datcu composed the ballad "Rojo" to complement the other pieces for this CD project. It intertwines harmonic and melodic content reminiscent of both classical and jazz styles. Trumpeter Sam Robinson wrote “Leia” for his daughter during the pandemic. With his simple harmony and melody, it reflects his philosophy that sometimes the best way to say something is directly and without any frills. Drummer Rick Shandling wrote Hurricane Debi for his wife, Debi. She thought it was time for him to write an up tempo energetic tune, and she provided the title and inspiration for a love song of total devastation. Bassist Caleb Drake wrote "Pensando en Tí" ("Thinking About You") while 2300 miles away from his wife Carelia waiting for her Visa approval. It is a jazz waltz with a Bill Evans feel that uses a constantly shifting tonal center in the A section and polytonal modes in the bridge. The 7/4 composition "Have You Seen Wayne?" is influenced by the music of Wayne Shorter and other pioneers of the hard bop sound.
