Premik Russell Tubbs And Margee Minier-Tubbs
Oneness World
Oneness-World is an eclectic yet consistently mesmerizing release by multi-instrumentalist Premik Russell Tubbs and spoken word artist and lyricist Margee Minier-Tubbs.
Joined by a quintet of greats, their set of original music explores fusion, impressionistic soundscapes, catchy grooves, Indian and Celtic influences, and even a swinging Christmas song.
The music of Oneness-World has been described as “a sonic journey into the heart of our oneness through its complex musical exploration of the unfolding cycles of time while delving into the mystery of existence and eternal breath of life.” The wide-ranging program, composed by Premik Russell Tubbs and Margee Minier-Tubbs, is richly inspiring, soulfully provocative, and an uplifting listening experience.
Premik Russell Tubbs is featured on saxophones, flutes and EWI with a stellar group that also includes notable contributions from Grammy Award Winning violinist Zach Brock, keyboardist Neil Alexander, pianist Steve Sandberg, bassist Michael O’Brien, and drummer-percussionist Todd Isler. Margee Minier-Tubbs contributes vocals and spoken word on four of the seven selections with “Catwalk, A Stitch In Time” also including vocals from Lola Kristine and Arta Jēkabsone. Patrick Carmichael’s spoken word duet with Margee inspires pure joy in “The Bells.”
But more than individual contributions, Oneness-World blends together a variety of idioms with its brilliant ensembles and colorful group sound. The opener, “Oneness,” begins with an ethereal spoken word and Premik Russell Tubbs’ alto sax leading the group through a spiritual jazz exploration that includes an infectious melody. “The Weave” is an upbeat and passionate fusion with noteworthy alto sax, piano, violin and keyboards solos. “Joie de Vivre” has a playful and catchy theme with stunning EWI and violin spots along with soulful and dynamic rhythms.
“Catwalk (A Stitch in Time)” is episodic; a powerful rockish vocal, some swinging on a tune similar to the jazz standard “Four”, a spoken word narrative that indicts the fashion industry for its harmful chemical waste and dark side and is “a powerful trilogy which takes the listener on a 100,000 year history course in the evolution of fashion, in 13 minutes.” The ensemble of “Norwegian Dance” explores the juncture where Scandinavian folk songs and fusion meet. On “La Ronde des Saisons,” the musicians create mysterious and atmospheric music that includes inventive interplay between flute and piano. “Oneness-World” concludes with a Christmas song, “The Bells,” that includes a cheerful poetic story with lyrics inspired by Edgar Allan Poe and some boppish alto sax and gypsy violin playing.
Multi-instrumentalist Premik Russell Tubbs has worked with a who’s who of top artists including Whitney Houston, Carlos Santana, Sting, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Jean-Luc and Clara Ponty, John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra (1974-1975), Ravi and Anoushka Shankar, Will Ackerman (of Windham Hill), and has shared the stage with Elton John, Billy Joel, Lady Gaga, James Taylor and the list goes on..
